“Blessed is the man who loves thy name, 0 Mary” exclaims St. Bonaventure. “Yes, truly blessed is he who loves thy sweet name, 0 Mother of God! For the past couple of days, I’ve been meditating on the Holy Name of Jesus. It is certainly well known that the Holy Name of our Lord is [...]

Daybook entries every Monday, per The Simple Woman’s instructions…here’s today: FOR TODAY May 19, 2008: Outside my window the clouds are speeding across the sky in swift succession. The sun peeks out, occasionally, as birds chirp merrily on this very windy, very chilly Monday afternoon. I am thinking about cutting out the pattern pieces for [...]

Today marks the one year anniversary of Catholic Family Vignettes! What an exciting year it’s been! With just under 40,000 visitors this first year, I’m delighted to make the acquaintance of so many new friends. It amazes me how new the blog world still feels…until this time last year, I’d never even visited a blog, [...]
Roasting marshmallows…

This is the bonfire that remains, thus far, unlit. The wind has been insane, of late, and today was certainly no exception. Gusts of 25 mph mean no bonfire…we don’t want to burn down the barn now, do we? So…here’s the alternative to the bonfire: the grill. Dad grilled the his signature barbecue ribs this [...]
Something About Mary, Day 18 – Mary, Beloved of the Trinity

As we prepare to celebrate the Most Holy Trinity this Sunday, I thought perhaps a reflection on our Lady’s role with the Trinity would be appropriate. Here is a bit of poetry composed by Sr. Anne Marie Harrison, IHM. I’ve included a few beautiful images of our Lady and the Most Holy Trinity, as well: [...]

We don’t have an attic. We don’t have a basement. We have a garage. A very leaky, very old, not-attached-to-the-house garage. It is a very poor storage facility. Nonetheless, that is exactly what it is used for. Plastic bins containing last season’s clothing, Christmas decorations, sleds and old bicycles…and it has actually served us well. [...]

From The Simple Woman FOR TODAY… Outside My Window… the trees are swaying in the brisk morning breeze, the irises have begun to open, birds fill the trees. I am thinking… about rearranging my bedroom, preparing for my elderly grandmother’s extended visit, taking the children to the park today. I am thankful for…hot tea, good [...]
Something About Mary, Day 17 – How to say the rosary worthily

The rosary…a prayer of perfection, the holy “chain” which binds Satan, a crown of roses with which we adorn our dear Mother. It is both a humble prayer and a most powerful spiritual weapon. Here is a lovely reflection to aid us in our efforts to pray the rosary worthily: Taken from The Secret Of [...]

Something About Mary, Day 15 – The Hail Mary
Posted in Uncategorized, tagged blessed mother, hail mary, virgin mary on May 14, 2008 | Leave a Comment »
The Angelic Salutation or Hail Mary contains a wealth of theology in one very short, yet thoroughly biblical prayer. It is the prayer I most frequently offer throughout the day. An ambulance passes the house…we pause and offer a quick Hail Mary for the potential victim of illness or injury. While knitting an article of [...]

SALVE, Regina, mater misericordiae, vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve. Ad te clamamus exsules filii Hevae. Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes in hac lacrimarum valle. HAIL holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up [...]
Bearing arms

We arrive at the park. The boys tumble out of the van, fully armed with plastic Nerf guns and artillery, whooping and hollering at the top of their lungs. I approach a park bench, and notice two very little boys seated on the grass watching the antics of my big “soldiers.” “Guns…” the littlest boy [...]

Emily: Mommy…I think I’m allergic… Mommy: What are you allergic to, Emily? Emily: Cat food… Mommy: Emily! Please tell me you didn’t eat the cat food! Emily: No, mommy…but I smelled it. I’m definitely allergic… *well thank heavens for that!
I am a traditional Catholic homeschooling mother of 9 children, married for 30 years to the most patient and sainted man. As converts to Catholicism in 1991, our family has only recently discovered the beauty and full expression of our beliefs in the timeless liturgy of antiquity, the Extraordinary Form also commonly referred to as the Traditional Latin Mass. An avid knitter, I also enjoy gardening, reading and immersing myself in the everyday graces of my vocation.
